Ginger Crook grew up in Gillette, Wyoming and began lessons when she was 5 years old. She didn’t always love the piano, but she stuck with it and grew to love it. When she was little, she would often make recordings of herself and send them to family members for Christmas. She began learning the organ in high school when her church congregation was in need for an organist. Her grandmother was an organist, so that seemed like a natural next step. She has played for church services off and on ever since. Meanwhile, certain members of her church began to ask her for piano lessons for her children. She began teaching piano at 16, but was admittingly terrible at it.
At that time, she began lessons with Dr. Theresa Bogard at the University of Wyoming. When it was time to pick a college, it was obvious to her to continue with Dr. Bogard and earn her B.M. in Piano Performance. During college, she began accompanying. While she didn’t enjoy it then, it was an amazing learning experience. She began accompanying a strings studio with violins and cellos, but learned valuable lessons from the trumpets, saxophones, flutes, and voice. She taught many children in Laramie, Wyoming until moving to Indiana for her husband’s graduate work in 2004.
While living in West Lafayette she taught up to 25 students as well as her own 4 children. She became a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music from Music Teacher’s National Association. She served in many capacities of the local association helping with Monster Concerts, Sunday Recitals, and the Achievement in Music Festivals. She moved to Avon, Indiana in 2009, volunteered to serve as the Achievement in Music Festival Head Chairperson while having a full studio of students. She has had fun accompanying many junior high and high school solo and ensemble music students. She loves accompanying strings most but have enjoyed vocal, saxophone, trumpet, trombone students too. She has taught a children’s choir for 6 years in her church, and has been the adult choir accompanist and organist as well.
In 2023 she moved to Washington for her husband’s job and continues to build relationships with teaching a handful of Indiana students online while beginning again with in-person lessons here in Maple Valley.
“Ginger taught piano to two of my sons and she is phenomenal. She gave them a great music theory framework through games and challenges that were never dull. Both have since been recognized by school music teachers as top in their grade because of Ginger’s instruction. When one of the boys broke his right thumb I thought he would need to take a break from lessons but Ginger got him a special book and used the time to work on rhythm and duets and everything he could still do. With Ginger they not only learned to play piano but to truly understand and love it.”
